Can you negotiate after accepting a job offer?
Once you've accepted verbally or in writing, renegotiating is much harder and can damage trust before you even start. It's reasonable when something material changed, the written offer doesn't match what you agreed, or the role's scope grew. Raise it immediately, explain exactly what changed and keep the request small.
When it's reasonable to reopen
- The written offer doesn't match what you agreed verbally
- The role, level or responsibilities changed after you accepted
- You discovered a material error, such as a missing bonus or wrong start date
How to ask
"I'm looking forward to starting. Reviewing the written offer, I noticed [specific difference from what we discussed]. Could we align it before I sign?"
Keep it factual and specific. Don't reopen the salary you already agreed to just because you saw a higher number elsewhere.
The risk
Employers can withdraw an offer, and reopening a settled negotiation can start the relationship on the wrong foot. The safer approach is to negotiate everything before you accept, and to ask for time if you need it.
Questions
Can I negotiate after signing the offer letter?
It's rarely well received unless there's an error or a change in the role. Ask right away and be specific about what changed.
How do I avoid this situation?
Ask for the full offer in writing and for a day or two to review it before you accept anything, even verbally.
