What to negotiate in a job offer besides salary

When base salary can't move, you can often negotiate a signing bonus, the start date, remote or hybrid days, extra vacation, the job title, an early salary review, relocation help, equipment or a training budget. Pick one or two that matter most to you and ask for them specifically.

Terms that are often negotiable

  • Signing bonus: a one-time payment that doesn't touch the salary band
  • Start date: more time between jobs, or an earlier start if you need the income
  • Remote or hybrid days, and which days
  • Vacation days or additional paid time off
  • Job title and level, which can matter more than money over time
  • An early salary review, for example at six months instead of twelve
  • Relocation support, equipment budget or a home-office stipend
  • Training, certifications or conference budget
  • Bonus target, commission structure or equity vesting details

How to ask

"Thank you for the offer, I'm excited about the role. I understand the base salary is set. Would there be flexibility on a signing bonus, or on a salary review at six months?"

Asking about one or two specific terms is far more effective than asking what else is available.

What to prioritize

A signing bonus is one-time money; a higher base compounds every year. If you can only get one, a base increase is usually worth more over time, but a bonus or an early review can bridge the gap when the band is genuinely capped.

Questions

Is it okay to negotiate benefits instead of salary?

Yes, and it's common when the pay band is fixed. Employers often have more flexibility on one-time or non-salary items.

Can I negotiate the job title?

Sometimes. A title that matches the work can help with future roles and pay, and it costs the employer nothing in cash.

Can I ask for an earlier salary review?

Yes. Ask for a specific date and what you'd need to show by then, and confirm it in writing.
